Painting beehives – family fun!

As the summer holidays have arrived in France, it’s an ideal time to get the girls involved in beekeeping but there’s a limit to what they can do with me. They do don a veil each and watch me work with the bees when something needs doing and of course, love to help harvest the honey – a sticky and sweet job just up their street! They also come out to bee swarms and removals with me where they help as translators and equipment carriers and hope for a reward goĆ»ter (snack) from the owners!

Painting beehives

As our number of beehives has increased, so has their impact on our garden where they sit. Originally I had painted them all with special silver bee paint (thermo-porous & insulating) bought at great expense at our nearest bee supplies shop, but as more appeared in the garden they started to stand out, looking out of place in their somewhat wild surroundings. Searching for photos when starting up this site reminded me just how great a line of multi-coloured hives could look and I started thinking about changing ours.
